Clearly Javier Fernandez is going to be known and loved by the flight sim community for the rest of his days as the Michelangelo of freeware contributors. If you are reading this, then you are probably somebody with an affinity for Naval Aviation in FSX/P3D, and that being the case, then there is almost zero chance that you do not already have his excellent freeware USS Nimitz and USS Eisenhower package. Javier is a big support for the Haze Grey project and we are huge fans of his. One day we aspire to create something as good as what he has already given us for free, but that day has not yet arrived.
Our carriers offer a couple important advantages in that (a) they are ours, and (b) we can continue to develop them. They also have all ten hulls painted and there are some little animations that can be controlled by the user. But those are purely functional considerations -- and we do not suggest that our base carrier model in even in the same league as Javier's work, at least not in 2017 as I write this.
So what if we wanted to swap out the FLEET TRAFFIC carriers with Javier's carriers?
By all means, feel free. We'll explain how to do that correctly here:
1. Go into your ROOT FSX-PED FOLDER and navigate to the SimObjects\Boats directory. Find the folder named HG CVN-68 USS Nimitz
2. Open the sim.cfg file and note that exact title of the carriers you wish to modify. For example, CVN68 USS Nimitz and CVN69 USS Dwight D Eisenhower. Please make a note of these.
3. Modify the title of the carriers you wish to modify. For example, change CVN68 USS Nimitz to CVN_68 USS Nimitz or something to that effect. The name we change to here does not matter.
4. Now navigate to Javiers folder, which is called USS_NIMITZ. Select the model you wish to use for your traffic. Let's say we want to use Model 5.
5. Back up the sim.cfg file. Either rename it or create a folder where you will be able to find it again.
6. Open the sim.cfg file and find the entry for Model 5. You will see Title=CVN68_5 which is what we will need to rename.
7. Change Title=CVN68_5 to read Title=CVN68 USS Nimitz. This is important, as it will not work otherwise.
8. Do the same for other carriers as you wish.
9. Save and close the sim.cfg file.
Now your FLEET TRAFFIC schedules will refer to the Javier's carrier model.
